Warner Music SA Releases “Stimela” Ahead Of An Icon Compilation Album
Written by manna maurice on August 29, 2021
Powerhouse music record label Warner Music SA is set to release a compilation album featuring some of South Africa’s most iconic songs. The album titled Mzansi Undercover honours some of South Africa’s musical legends, and it begins this tribute with the release of the lead-single, classic jazz smash-hit Stimela (The Coal Train) by the late great South African jazz legend Hugh “Bra Hugh” Masekela.
Considered not only a South African but a world-renowned musician, Hugh Masekela had recorded the classic hit song back in 1971 during his time in exile from Apartheid, South Africa. The song had been for his 1974 album, I Am Not Afraid and tells the tale of a coal train that brings miners from Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to apartheid, South Africa, to work. It has become an anthem for jazz and music lovers and remains a classic piece of art that lives on long after the passing of the icon.
In regards to the Mzansi Undercover album, Warner Music SA had this to say in a press release; “Mzansi Undercover honours a selection of timeless, iconic South African songs through a production approach that delivers a wide-screened, chilled-out experience to the listener.”
One can only wait in eager anticipation to see the rest of the old-school, classic, gems that Warner Music SA is planning to add to this album. With seemingly never-ending issues that the country faces, a little unity through music is something that everyone could use.
