South Africa’s seasoned journalist, Patrick O’leary, took the second prize and bagged USD1 000, in the photo category of the recent SADC Media Awards. The awards were announced by the president of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, who is the outgoing chairperson of SADC. President Nyusi announced the winners at the 41st SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government opening ceremony in Malawi, on 17 August 2021.
Patrick O’learly, editor of truck magazine, FleetWatch, was second to Gaseitsiwe Moruakgomo from Botswana who walked away with USD 2 500.
Patrick has been covering stories in the afflicted truck industry in South Africa and the SADC region. His travels around the region have enabled him to document growing tensions in the truck industry which have been ignored but have now caught the attention of the relevant government institutions for the past 10 years. He has covered stories such as the petrol bombing of 20 trucks in Gauteng in 2020 cargo theft and truck driver violence in Durban in 2015, amongst other aspects affecting the industry.
The experienced journalist’s award is aligned with SADC’s Regional Infrastructure Development Master Plan, which is a roadmap to develop essential transport infrastructure like road, rails and ports.
According to a press released by the Government Communications and Information System (GCIS), “these awards further seek to bring and enhance partnership between media and government institutions in advancing the achievements and good stories of this region in bettering the lives of its citizens.”
The recognition of Patrick’s informed work is, therefore, an attempt to develop a collaborative relationship that could possibly lead to more resources to better the trucking industry in the region amongst other issues.
