Kenya bans protests in city centres

Protests have been banned in the central business districts of three main Kenyan cities – the capital Nairobi, Mombasa and the opposition stronghold of Kisumu.

The minister of internal security, Fred Matiang’i, said demonstration organisers would be held individually responsible for any destruction caused.

There has been growing anxiety in Kenya since the Supreme Court voided the results of August's presidential election.

The main opposition leader, Raila Odinga, has pronounced his withdrawal from a scheduled re-run and his supporters have been holding demonstrations.
