At least five people were killed in Guinea when security forces descended on students who were protesting against teacher strikes that have kept them out of class, media reports say.
Students attended the demonstration in large numbers and expressed their anger by throwing stones and sticks at riot police.
Officials confirmed the fatalities and attributed the deaths to the organizers of the protest, for organising what they called an illegal demonstration.
A hospital worker told the media riot police and gendarmerie shot the dead at close range.
At least 30 people were injured, including members of the security forces. Twelve protesters have been arrested.
Teacher unions in Guinea went on strike for several weeks ago over poor pay.
