10 Namibian athletes qualify for Rio 2016

With 24 days to go, until the start of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, 10 Namibian athletes have qualified for the international sporting showcase.

According to the secretary-general of the Namibia National Olympic Committee, Joan Smit, the 10 athletes who have reached the qualifying criteria are marathon runners Helalia Johannes, Beata Naigambo, Alina Armas and Mynhardt Kauanivi; boxers Jonas Junias and Mathias Hamunyela; cyclists Dan Craven, Vera Adrian and Michelle Vorster; and shooter Gaby Ahrens.

Namibia, which has a won a total of 4 silver medals at the Olympics, first participated at the Olympics in 1980.

Namibian sprint king, Frankie Fredericks, won the medals at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
