Senegal down Rwanda in friendly

Rwanda suffered a 0-2 loss to Senegal in a friendly on Saturday at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali.

The encounter, a preparatory test for Rwanda ahead of next week’s AFCON 2017 qualifier against Mozambique, saw the Teranga Lions score two goals by the half-hour mark.

Amavubi conceded the first goal in the 14th minute with Mame Biram Diouf breaking the deadlock before Sankhare Younnouse doubled the lead in the 30th minute.

The hosts battled harder to get a goal but could not convert their chances through Ernest Sugira and Jacques Tuyisenge.

In the second half, Rwanda coach Johnathan McKinstry made six chances, introducing Dany Usengimana for Ernest Sugira, Patrick Sibomana for Dominique Savio Nshuti, Michel Rusheshangonga for Fitina Omborenga, Ally Niyonzima for Yannick Mukunzi,Haruna Niyonzima for Jacques Tuyisenge and Manzi Thierry for Rwatubyaye Abdul.

The changes saw an improved Amavubi but they failed to find the back of the net.

McKinstry said that the friendly was positive for preparations for the Mozambique clash next week, whilst also allowing him to rotate his squad to ensure players who had a heavy league programme recently were not overworked.

“The first 30 minutes was like a tornado, such was our opponents speed and movement. This was at premier league level, and our players, used to competing in the slower leagues here in east Africa took some time to get to grips with the tempo of the game,”

Rwanda’s last appearance at Afcon was back in 2004 at the expense of bitter rivals and neighbours Uganda as well as Ghana.
