Holy Alpha Drops Iqhawe ft. FlashIkumkani

The choice between sticking to your roots or embracing what is mainstream and trending can be a difficult decision for young artists. Whether an artist is their authentic selves or trying to appeal to commercial audiences, the proof is always in the work. In the case of Cape Town’s own Xhosa emcee Holy Alpha, her originality echoes throughout her music to the extent that you cannot compare it to any other artists.

Holy Alpha (real name, Sanele Alpha Gwabe) is a young emcee whose music is deeply rooted in her culture, upbringing, and personal experiences. She was been popping in the underground scene since 2016 with her first single, Guala. Since then, she’s been steadily dropping singles, making a name, whilst staying true to herself. In the spirit of Heritage Day, Holy Alpha dropped a new single called Iqhawe, which means “Hero” in Xhosa featuring fellow Xhosa artist, FlashIkumkani.

The track is a tale of grit and determination, Holy Alpha raps about the struggles that she went through growing up in Khayelitsha as well as her battles as an upcoming artist. Dudelibeats’ work on the production is particularly impressive, fusing tribal guitar strings and 808s makes for a hard-hitting African trap banger. FlashIkumkani (real name, Hlumile Mangoloti) flexes the unique vocals and Xhosa bars that he is known for and compliments both the song and Holy Alpha’s performance quite nicely.

In an interview with BreakroomAfrica back in April Holy Alpha had the following to say, “I know what I want and I know that I’m great and capable of achieving anything when it comes to my music”. Fans and music lovers alike can only hope that she keeps this hunger and ambition in her heart and music because, at the tender age of 21, Holy Alpha’s career trajectory seems to be only going up. This fierce determination can be heard in this track and it adds to the feel of embracing your culture and authentic self, a beautiful message to share this month.

Make sure to give Iqhawe a listen during this Heritage month and be on the lookout for more Holy Alpha. https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/holyalpha/iqhawe-feat-flashikumkani
